What does a custom Claude Code skill cost, and when does it pay for itself?

A Claude Code contractor in the US or Canada bills $80 to $140 an hour at mid level, $120 to $220 at senior level. Godmode's custom build is a fixed $250. The number that decides it is neither of those: it is what the chore is already costing you every week.

TL;DR

💵 Work out what the chore already costs you

The price of the build is the small number. The chore is the big one, because it charges you every week forever.

Put your own two figures in and read the answer. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Payback calculator
$5,200the chore costs you a year

Your own arithmetic, done in your browser: minutes ÷ 60 × 52 × your rate. It assumes the skill removes the whole chore, which no skill ever quite does, so read the payback week as the earliest one rather than a promised one.

Core insight: a build is not expensive or cheap on its own. It is expensive if the chore is rare, and cheap if the chore is weekly.

📊 The five ways to get one built, and what each costs

These are the routes a buyer actually has in 2026. The first four are the open market; the last one is mine.

RouteWhat it costsWhat you carry
Write it yourself$0 beyond your Claude planYour own hours, learning and testing it
Contractor, hourly$80 to $140 mid, $120 to $220 seniorOpen-ended hours, and you write the scope
Consultant, day rate$150 to $250 an hour, quoted in daysMinimum engagements
Agency retainer$15,000 to $60,000 a monthA monthly commitment for one skill
Fixed-price build$250, agreed in writing firstScope limits: one skill, one machine

The hourly and retainer figures come from ayautomate's 2026 Claude Code hiring guide. The consulting rate, and the $30,000 to $60,000 floor on a three-month project, come from Claude Code Guides' cost comparison.

Think of it like a tradesman's jig. Nobody buys a jig because a jig is exciting. You buy it the tenth time you cut the same piece by hand, and by the twentieth it has paid for itself.

✖️ When paying for one is the wrong call

Most of what gets written about this is trying to sell you something. So here is the other half.

Worth paying for

  • A chore you repeat weekly or daily
  • Steps that must be done the same way every time
  • Work you would otherwise bill a client for
  • Something you have already tried and abandoned twice

Not worth paying for

  • A one-off job you will never repeat
  • Five minutes a month
  • A task you cannot yet describe in writing
  • Anything you enjoy doing by hand

Skills are plain text files, so the do-it-yourself route is genuinely free. Start with the step-by-step guide to writing a Claude Code skill, and only pay if the hours it would take you are worth more than the price.

🧾 What the fixed $250 actually buys

A fixed price is worth something only if what it covers is written down before you pay. This is the sequence on a $250 custom build:

📝 You describe the chore · free, three questions

📄 A written scope comes back within 24 hours · still free

👤 A human at Godmode reads and signs that scope off

💳 You agree it, then pay $250. Or walk away at no cost

🛠️ Built and tested on your real example, within 5 business days

✅ Fixed free until it does what the scope says

The first three builds can ask to be invoiced after it runs, so the money moves only once the skill has done the job on your machine.

There is one more number you should have from me: paid custom builds delivered so far, zero. That is exactly why the scope is free and the invoice can wait.

🔁 The running cost after you own it

A build is a one-off cost. Running it is not, and that is where a cheap quote quietly turns expensive.

More on the machine, the plan and the accounts: what do I need to run a custom Claude Code skill?

Six questions to ask before you send anyone money

Ask these of me, or of anyone else quoting you. A route that cannot answer them in writing is the expensive one, whatever its hourly rate says.

  1. Is the price fixed, or does the clock keep running?
  2. Do I get the scope in writing before I pay?
  3. What exactly happens if the delivered skill misses that scope?
  4. What does it cost me every month after delivery?
  5. Who owns the build once it is paid for?
  6. How many of these have you delivered, and can I see one?

On the fifth question, the short answer here is that you do: who owns a custom Claude Code skill you pay for? On the dates behind the third, see how long a custom build takes.

Quick answers

What does a custom Claude Code skill cost?

$80 to $220 an hour from a contractor, $15,000 to $60,000 a month from an agency, or a fixed $250 for one skill on a Godmode custom build.

When does it pay for itself?

Divide the price by what the chore costs you a week. One hour a week at $100 covers a $250 build in under three weeks; five minutes a month never covers it.

Is there a free way?

Yes. Skills are plain text files you can write yourself. Paying buys back the hours of learning, writing and testing, not access to something locked away.

What does it cost to run afterwards?

A paid Claude plan, Claude Pro being $20 a month at Anthropic's listed price, plus whatever the accounts it touches already cost you. No licence fee.

What if it does not work?

It is fixed free until it does what the written scope says on your example, with a 14-day money-back guarantee on top.
