Who owns a custom Claude Code skill you pay someone to build?

You should, and it must be in writing. On Godmode's $250 custom build you own the delivered skill on payment. You may use, change and share it inside your organisation. Godmode keeps only general techniques, never your brief or data.

TL;DR

📜 Why this is worth asking before you pay

A Claude Code skill is a folder of plain text: one SKILL.md file of instructions, plus any helper scripts. Anyone who has the folder can copy it.

So "who owns it" is not about who holds the file. It is about what you are allowed to do with it, and what the builder is allowed to do with your idea. That only exists if someone wrote it down.

No written ownership clause means you do not know. Ask for it before you send money, not after delivery.

⚖️ What Godmode's terms say

This is the ownership clause for a $250 custom build, as written in the Terms:

Owner
You, on payment.
Use
Yes, inside your organisation.
Modify
Yes, inside your organisation.
Share
Yes, inside your organisation.
Builder keeps
The right to reuse general techniques.
Builder never keeps
Your brief or your data.

The published clause stops at "inside your organisation". If you need more, for example to sell the skill on, say so in the brief. The brief and the written scope are free, and you only pay after agreeing the scope.

📦 Ownership you can actually use

Owning code you cannot read or change is not worth much. Here is what the delivery contains, so the ownership is practical:

In the zip

  • SKILL.md plus any scripts, readable source, no obfuscation
  • Plain-English README
  • The written scope
  • The tests it passed on your example

Not tying you to us

  • No telemetry
  • No auto-updater
  • No calls to Godmode's servers
  • Runs on your machine, under your accounts

A SHA-256 checksum of the zip is sent with delivery, so you can confirm the file you keep is the file that was built.

🛍️ Custom build vs a ready-made skill

People mix these up. Buying a skill off the shelf and paying for one to be built are different deals:

Ready-made skill

  • Personal, non-transferable, non-exclusive licence
  • Any number of your own machines
  • Modify for personal use
  • No redistributing, reselling, sharing or posting it
  • Teams buy one seat per operator

Custom build

  • You own the delivered build
  • Use, modify and share inside your organisation
  • Builder reuses general techniques only
  • Brief kept confidential

Both carry the same 14-day money-back guarantee. For a custom build the 14 days run from delivery.

Ask any builder these five

If the answer to the first one is vague, treat it as "no".

Quick answers

Who owns a custom Claude Code skill I pay someone to build?

Whatever the builder's written terms say. On Godmode's custom build, you own it on payment and may use, modify and share it inside your organisation.

Can I change or share it after delivery?

Yes, inside your organisation. It ships as readable source with a README and tests, so you or Claude Code can edit it.

Can the builder reuse or publish my skill?

Godmode may reuse general techniques, never your brief or data, and publishes nothing without your written OK.

Is it different from buying a ready-made skill?

Yes. A ready-made skill is a personal licence with no redistribution. A custom build is owned by you.
