$0 Checks Before a $440 Call-Out: Safety Switch Keeps Tripping With Nothing Plugged In
💵 $0 is what the unplug-and-reset checks cost, before you pay a call-out like ours: $440 incl GST, one call-out, October 2026.
🔌 Nothing plugged in, still trips: lights, the stove, the oven and hot water are wired in, so they stay connected.
⚠️ Wiring or the switch: nuisance tripping can be faulty wiring, and a safety switch can fail.
✅ Then: book a licensed electrician and hand over your list of what you ruled out.
This is for Australian homeowners whose safety switch keeps tripping, even with nothing plugged in. The checks come from the Electrical Safety Office Queensland and Energy Safe Victoria, and the one price comes from a real job.
The $0 checks, in order
You only pull plugs and press the buttons on the safety switch. No covers come off, and nothing inside the switchboard gets touched.

If it trips as one item goes back in, that item may be the cause. You found it for $0, before anyone came out.
Why a safety switch keeps tripping with nothing plugged in
Unplugging every plug does not disconnect everything in the house: lights, the stove, the oven and hot water are wired in, so they stay connected. The Electrical Safety Office Queensland says nuisance tripping can be caused by overloaded circuits, faulty electrical equipment or faulty wiring.

Think of it like turning off every tap in the house and the water meter still ticking over. The leak is somewhere a tap cannot reach.
When it is not you: the wiring or the switch

Old wiring
"The insulated coating on household wiring degrades over time, and can leave bare wires exposed."
