$0 a Run to the Author: Do I Pay for Claude Code Skills Per Run?

The author of a skill gets $0 when you run it, I pay Anthropic for the Claude usage like everyone else. On an API key I'd pay per token, so 20 of their $0.55 example sessions a month comes to $132 over 12 months.

TL;DR

📄 The skill: A file on your disk. Its author bills $0 a run.
💳 The run: Claude usage, on your plan or your API key.
⚖️ The pick: API key: cost a run x runs a month x 12. Pro: $240 over 12 months.

❓ Do I pay for Claude Code skills per run?

Every skill I've got installed is just a folder on my computer with a SKILL.md in it, a few of them have scripts as well.

The bill is for Claude. On Pro or Max it comes out of the usage your plan already covers, and on an API key it's charged per token.

💬 1. You ask Claude Code to do the chore

📂 2. It reads the skill file from your own disk

🧠 3. Claude does the thinking: this is the usage

⚙️ 4. Any script in the skill runs on your computer

🧾 5. The usage lands on your plan or your API key

✅ 6. The skill's author bills $0 for the run

🧾 Who bills you, and how often

I sell skills myself and don't charge per run for them either, it's a one-off payment or a subscription.

Anthropic, planMonthlyClaude Pro $20 a month ($17 on annual billing). Max from $100

I think of it like a cookbook, I'd buy it once and the author wouldn't know how often I used it.

📊 Plan or API key: which costs less over 12 months?

On an API key every run adds to the bill. Pro stays at $240 for the same 12 months unless you keep running into its limits.

Source: API key: $0.55 a run (the example in Anthropic's Claude Code cost docs, not a measurement of any skill) x runs a month x 12; Claude Pro: $20 a month x 12 at the listed price, inside its usage limits; skill author: $0, because a skill is a file on your computer.

🧮 Find your own break-even

Run the skill once on an API key, then type /usage and look at the Total cost line. That's your cost a run.

API key, 12 months$132
Claude Pro, 12 months$240
Pro wins above36 runs

At 20 runs a month and $0.55 a run, the API key is cheaper: $132 against $240 over 12 months.

$0.55 is the example Anthropic uses in its cost docs. A skill that reads a lot of files costs more than that, and a small one less.

🔍 What makes one run cost more

You pay for everything Claude reads and writes. A run that pulls a whole log file into the chat costs a lot more than one that reads a short config file.

Cheaper runs

  • A script does the sums, not Claude
  • /clear between unrelated jobs
  • Sonnet for routine work

Costlier runs

  • One session left open all day
  • Opus left as the default
  • Huge files read whole

I've got 71 installed right now and they barely cost me anything, only the descriptions get loaded until I use one.

⚠️ When a plan stops being flat

I'd used 89% of my weekly limit by Sunday morning. Past the limit you either wait for it to reset or buy usage credits.

If you keep hitting that, put Max and your API cost through the calculator above.

💵 What does it cost to get one?

You can write a skill yourself for free with our step-by-step skill guide. For what else you need on the machine, see what you need to run a custom Claude Code skill.

Or I can build it for a fixed $250. You agree in writing what it does before I start: get a custom Claude Code skill built.

I added up the first year of that build in a separate post.
