130 Hours a Year: A Claude Code Skill for Email Triage

I reckon about half an hour a day goes on email. That's 130 hours over 260 workdays, or $13,000 at $100 an hour.

TL;DR

⏱️ The cost: minutes a day x 260 workdays x your hourly rate.
🧩 The skill: sorts new mail into three piles and drafts the first. You send.
💵 The build: $250 once. It pays back when the time saved passes $250.

❓ What does a Claude Code skill for email triage do?

Gmail already puts promotions and social stuff in their own tabs, so I'd only bother with Primary.

⌨️ 1. You type /triage, or a scheduled task does
↓
📂 2. Claude reads the skill file from your own disk
↓
📥 3. It pulls the new mail: a connected inbox or a folder of saved messages
↓
🏷️ 4. Claude sorts each one: reply today, reply later, ignore
↓
✍️ 5. It writes a draft for every reply-today message
↓
✅ 6. You read the drafts, fix anything off, then send

Claude Code can reach Gmail through an MCP connector, or you can point the skill at a folder of saved messages.

Source: Each bar is hours a day x the hourly rate x 260 workdays (5 days x 52 weeks), the reader's own arithmetic on example rates, not survey data. The one-off build is the fixed $250 price on getgodmode.dev/custom-build.html.

🧮 Work out your own number

You'll probably have to guess the minutes, I did. Reading through the sorted list takes a while too, so I put 10 in for that.

Hours back, 260 days86.7 h
Worth, 260 days$8,667
$250 pays back in8 workdays

Saving 20 minutes a day is 86.7 hours over 260 workdays, worth $8,667 at $100 an hour. A $250 build pays back in 8 workdays.

I'd still read everything it puts in reply today, I just wouldn't have to wade through the rest to find it.

📈 What I can show you so far

The only email numbers I have are from 14 September, when I sent 96 and 93 were delivered. I couldn't see who opened any of them.

⏰ Can it run without you?

Yes, claude -p runs Claude Code without the chat window, and you can put /triage in the prompt. Point a scheduled task at that and the sorted list is there when you sit down.

This is the line the scheduled task would run:

cd ~/mail && claude -p "/triage ./inbox" --tools "Read" --disallowedTools "mcp__*" > triage.txt

I'd keep it to drafts, never send, because a wrong reply to a client costs more than a slow one. There's more on leaving a chore running in whether Claude Code can run a chore without you watching.

⚖️ When it's worth building

It suits mail that's the same few things most days. I wouldn't bother if every reply needs you to think.

Good fit

  • The same few kinds of mail every day
  • Replies that follow a pattern: quotes, bookings, receipts
  • A pile you ignore anyway

Poor fit

  • Every message is different
  • Replies that need your opinion
  • Mail you have to read in full anyway
